Solutions

Global & Local

Global: Policymaking

One solution discussed by various interviewees was the idea of requiring AI companies and data centers to release their data. Some companies already publish sustainability reports, like Google, but researchers still question the data-gathering process. For example, some companies misrepresent their data through net carbon accounting, in which they offset their carbon emissions with renewable energy generation. Voluntary sustainability reports often lack the statistical significance needed to make solutions.  Policy-makers advocating for data to be released and setting up restrictions that limit companies' carbon footprint can contribute to solving this issue, both locally and globally.

Local:
Informed Consumerism

Local communities, particularly AI users, need to take the time to better understand how AI works and what consequences exist. Individuals can research different companies to choose a platform that publishes data or uses a large percentage of renewable energy. Informed consumerism is the easiest way to make a change on a small scale.

Global Collaboration

On the global level, both politicians, researchers, and industry leaders need to collaborate on solving this issue. In February 2026, the India AI Impact Summit was held in New Delhi, bringing together AI leaders from around the world. The summit tackled the problems of inclusivity, economic development, the environment, and more within the AI sphere. This event was an example of how the global community can meet as a whole to make progress on the challenges that AI brings.
